Be able to perform phacoemulsification and intra ocular lens implantation surgery safely and successfully, and managing complications during surgery



  1. Perform the complete preoperative ophthalmologic examination of cataract patients
  2. Perform complete pre operative preparation of cataract patient including refraction, keratometry, biometry
  3. Understand phacoemulsification machine and being able to prepare the machine for the surgery
  4. Perform phacoemulsification and intra ocular lens implantation surgery
  5. Manage basic and advanced clinical and surgical cataract problems
  6. Effectively diagnose and manage intra operative and post operative complications



  1. Identify the most common causes and types of cataract (anterior polar, posterior sub capsular, cortical nuclear sclerosis etc)
  2. List the basic history and examination steps for preoperative cataract evaluation (refraction, IOP, slitlamp, funduscopy, retinoscopy,  keratometry, biometry)
  3. Describe the relationship of glaucoma and uveitis to cataract surgery
  4. Describe the types, indications and techniques of anesthesia of phaco surgery (topical, local and general)
  5. Describe the steps in phaco surgical procedures / techniques including  instruments for the phaco surgery
  6. Describe the phaco machines (including trouble shooting and altering parameter setting)
  7. Describe the types of IOLs and IOL power calculation
  8. Describe the types and application of OVD in phaco surgery
  9. Describe the common complications of phaco surgery and its management
  10. Describe the indications for, principles of, techniques of, and proper time of YAG laser capsulotomy
  11. Describe the post operative evaluation
  12. Recognize, treat or refer post op complications



  1. Perform keratometry
  2. Perform US biometry, and calculation of IOL  power
  3. Able to perform phacoemulsification and intra ocular lens implantation, including mastering of the following skills :
    • wound construction
    • CCC
    • Utilization of OVD
    • Phaco techniques ( stop n chop, horizontal / vertical chop)
    • Instrumentation and techniques of I/A
    • IOL implantation (rigid and foldable IOLs)
  4. Perform intraoperative and postoperative management of any event  that may occur during or as a result of cataract surgery, including :
  • PCR
  • Vitreous loss
  • Anterior and posterior segment bleeding
  • Positive posterior pressure
  • Choroidal detachment
  • Expulsive hemorrhage
  • Elevated intra ocular pressure and secondary glaucoma
  • Use of topical medications
  • Astigmatism
  • Corneal edema
  • Wound dehiscence
  • Hyphema
  • Residual cortex or nucleus remnant
  • Dropped nucleus
  • Uveitis
  • CME

Post operative early and late intra ocular infection



  1. Length of time : 3 months
  2. Frequency of training : 12 days/time
  3. Timing of training : every Sunday
